Quake – Unleash the Gothic First-Person Shooter

Released in 1996, it marked the beginning of the Quake series and quickly became a groundbreaking title for MS-DOS, Microsoft Windows, and Linux, followed by versions for Mac OS, Sega Saturn, and Nintendo 64.

Immerse yourself in medieval, maze-like environments, battling monsters with a diverse arsenal of weaponry, all inspired by gothic fiction and the works of H. P. Lovecraft.

A Journey Through Dark Dimensions

In single-player mode, players navigate through challenging levels, face menacing monsters, and uncover secret areas before reaching an exit. Unlock doors using switches or keys and progress to the next level.

Choose from easy, medium, or hard skill levels before accessing an episode, and for the daring, there’s the elusive “Nightmare” skill level, carefully hidden to avoid accidental ventures.

Episodic Adventures

Single-player campaign is divided into four gripping episodes, each with seven to eight levels. Within each episode, players will encounter a secret level, and one episode even features a “low gravity” level, testing players’ abilities in a unique way. If your character meets their untimely demise, you’ll have to restart the level.

Save your progress at any time in the PC versions, or between levels in the console versions. Complete an episode to return to the hub “START” level, where you can choose your next thrilling adventure. Each episode starts you from scratch, without any previously collected items.

Recover a magic rune in each episode, and when all runes are obtained, the “END” level reveals itself, containing a final puzzle.

The Quest to Stop “Quake”

In the single-player campaign, you take on the role of the protagonist, the unnamed but later named Ranger (voiced by Trent Reznor), on a mission to halt an enemy known as “Quake.” The government’s teleportation experiment using a “Slipgate” was compromised by Quake, leading to deadly incursions by enemy death squads from other dimensions into the “Human” dimension.

As the sole survivor of “Operation Counterstrike,” you must journey through overrun human military bases, use the Slipgate or its otherworld equivalent to access different dimensions, and collect four magic runes that hold the key to stopping Quake and saving Earth from invasion.

A Lovecraftian Journey

Quake’s dark and atmospheric realms draw inspiration from H. P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos, featuring gothic, medieval, and lava-filled caves and dungeons.

You’ll encounter enemies like Dimensional Shamblers and Formless Spawn of Tsathoggua, with the main villain being the Old One, Shub-Niggurath. Each episode bears a Lovecraftian name, immersing players in a haunting and captivating world.
