Wacky Wheels is an exciting kart racing video game that hit the gaming scene in 1994, developed by Apogee Software for MS-DOS.

This game bears a striking resemblance to Super Mario Kart from the Super NES, but with a unique twist—instead of traditional karts, players ride around in amusing lawn mowers, and the racers are quirky animals from a zoo.

Gameplay and Features

In Wacky Wheels, players can choose from eight adorable and wacky animals, each with its own distinct personality and animations. The eclectic roster includes a camel, elephant, moose, panda, pelican, raccoon, shark, and tiger. Throughout the races, you have the chance to collect various power-ups and objects, such as hedgehogs, bombs, and oil slicks, which can be used to shoot or hinder opponents.

The game offers both single-player and multiplayer modes. In the multiplayer mode, players can engage in head-to-head races or exhilarating battles in special arenas. The latter mode, aptly named “Wacky shoot-out,” shares similarities with classic deathmatch modes from first-person shooter games or the Battle Mode in Super Mario Kart.

Shareware and Unlockable Content

Wacky Wheels was initially released as shareware, offering limited content with just a few characters and courses available. To experience the full breadth of the game, players were required to register and unlock the remaining characters and courses. Notably, Wacky Wheels features the first-ever appearance of the infamous Dopefish in a video game.

Online Gameplay

Beyond the single-player and local multiplayer options, Wacky Wheels introduced an exciting online component called “Comm-Bat play.” This feature allows players to compete against each other in thrilling online races, adding an extra layer of excitement and competition to the gameplay experience.

Wacky Wheels offers a delightful and quirky kart racing experience, inviting players to immerse themselves in a world of zany animals and frantic racing action. With a variety of game modes, unlockable content, and charming graphics, this game promises countless hours of fun and laughter for players of all ages.
