The Humans (aka Dino Dudes, Dinolympics, Evolution: Dino Dudes) sprang to life in the creative minds of Rodney Humble during his tenure at Imagitec Design. Conceived as a project for the Atari Lynx, the game’s evolution was inspired by Psygnosis’ Lemmings.
Humble meticulously crafted his ideas, transferring them to Imagitec programmers who brought them to fruition. Atari Corporation recognized the title’s potential, commissioning additional conversions for their platforms.
A Trilogy
The game’s success led to three sequels: The Humans: Insult to Injury (1992), Humans 3: Evolution – Lost in Time (1995), and The Humans: Meet the Ancestors! (2009).
Each installment expanded on the original’s concept, creating a captivating saga of human evolution.
The Gameplay
A Puzzle Odyssey
The Humans presents a puzzle-centric gameplay reminiscent of Lode Runner or Lemmings. Players navigate a tribe of humans, utilizing their unique abilities and tools to achieve level-specific goals.
Whether it’s finding a crucial tool, eliminating dinosaurs, or reaching a designated endpoint, each level poses a distinct challenge.
Tasks can include finding objects (like a spear) on the screen, or trying to reach a specific destination which may require the use of objects you have discovered so far. Each level has a time limit, when time runs out the level can be restarted.
Tools of the Trade
Navigate the intricacies of each level by exploiting an array of tools such as spears, torches, wheels, ropes, and even a witch doctor in advanced stages.
The tribe’s ability to construct human ladders adds an extra layer of complexity, requiring players to strategize their every move.
Evolutionary Adversaries
Encounter various enemies, from dinosaurs with a taste for unarmed humans to spear-wielding members of rival tribes.
Adapt your strategy to overcome these challenges, whether it’s wielding a spear for defense, riding pterodactyls to unreachable platforms, or utilizing NPCs to your advantage.
The Humans Legacy
The game earned accolades for its originality, presentation, and audio during its Amiga debut. While subsequent versions received mixed reviews, the game’s legacy is undeniable.
Its influence reverberates through the gaming industry, showcasing the creative brilliance of Imagitec Design.
